At Friday, 30.Jan.09 we had a joint event between KDE and the Fellowship of the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) and it was simply awesome! Beside a lot of KDE and FSFE people we had a lot of visitors and at the end we were about 40 people! All interested in KDE 4.2 and Free Software.

At the beginning Frederik started with an introduction and showed all the new and cool things in KDE 4.2. After that i gave a talk about the work of FSFE, especially in 2008, explained the role of the Fellowship for FSFE and highlighted some cool activities from our Fellows. My slides can be found here (German). I think i could attract some people and would be really happy to see some new faces at our next Fellowship meeting (probably somewhen in March). After my talk we made a small break and than Frank continued with a very interesting talk about the KDE community and how to get involved as a developer, writer, artist or user. Last but not least Sven talked about the new version of Amarok and what we can expect from the new release.

This was the official part. Now the party started and we had a lot of fun and many interesting discussions between KDE developers and users, FSFE Fellows and all the other people who joined us at this evening. We also discussed some possible activities for the Fellowship Group Stuttgart. Some Fellows seems to be quite interested in the topic “Free Software in school and education”. I also think that this is a really important topic. Remember, the pupils from today are the decision makers from tomorrow.

As it becomes later a small group of people survived. One of them was Martin Konold, a KDE Developer from the very first days of KDE. He told us a lot of interesting and funny stories about the beginning of KDE and the development of the Free Software desktop.

At 2:30 at night a great event was over. I really want to thank Frederik for his great help in organising this event and all the other KDE people who helped to make this event that awesome! It was a lot of fun and a great cooperation between KDE and FSFE people! Looking forward for the next opportunity to organise such a great event!

Am Freitag, den 30. Januar findet um 18:00 Uhr wieder ein Fellowship-Treffen in Stuttgart statt. Veranstaltungsort wird das Unithekle/Unitop an der Universität Stuttgart (Campus Vaihingen) sein.

Erreichen könnt ihr das Unithekle mit den S-Bahn Linien S1, S2 und S3, Haltestelle Universität, oder direkt mit dem Auto. Einen genauen Lageplan und weitere Informationen findet ihr hier.

Ich freue mich ganz besonders, euch diesmal nicht nur im Namen der FSFE, sondern auch im Namen von KDE einladen zu dürfen. Am 27. Januar wird KDE4.2 veröffentlicht, und wir wollen dies am 30. gemeinsam feiern. Es werden auch einige KDEler anwesend sein, ich freue mich auf Frederik Gladhorn (KDE), Lydia Pintscher (Amarok) und Frank Karlitschek (kde-apps.org).

Als Programmpunkte werden wir einen kleinen Überblick über die Arbeit der FSFE und die Aktivitäten des Fellowship haben sowie eine Vorstellung von KDE4.2 und einigen Anwendungen.

Darüber hinaus werden wir natürlich genug Zeit haben, um in gemütlicher Atmosphäre die Veröffentlichung von KDE4.2 zu feiern und uns über alle möglichen Themen rund um Freie Software auszutauschen.

Eingeladen sind alle, die sich für Freie Software interessieren.

Shane Coughlan, Koordinator der Freedom Task Force (FTF) der FSFE, wurde von der Wiener Fellowship-Gruppe eingeladen, um über die Professionalisierung  Freier Software zu referieren. Diese gelegenheit nutze das ORF für ein ausführliches Interview:

In einer Zeit, in der selbst Microsoft das Hohe Lied von Open Source anstimmt, scheint es der freien Software an Gegnern und auch an Motivation zu fehlen. ORF.at sprach mit dem FSFE-Rechtsexperten Shane Martin Coughlan über Microsoft, Google Chrome und die neuen Herausforderungen für freie Entwickler.

Dieses Jahr gibt es was zu feiern, GNU wird 25 Jahre alt und niemand geringeres als Stephen Fry hat die Geburtstagsrede gehalten.

Vor 25 Jahren begann alles, als sich Richard Stallman mit der zunehmenden Proprietarisierung von Software nicht abfinden wollte und sich entschloss ein vollständig freies Betriebssystem zu schreiben: GNU. Schnell fand er viele Mitstreiter und Anfang der 90er war das Betriebssystem so gut wie fertig. Es fehlte nur noch ein Kernel, dass Programm das für die Steuerung der Hardware zuständig ist. Hier kommt Linus Torvalds ins Spiel, der einen Kernel namens Linux schrieb und diesen als Freie Software unter der GPL veröffentlichte. Von diesem Tag an war es möglich, indem man GNU und Linux kombiniert (daher auch der Name GNU/Linux),  ein vollständig freies Betriebssystem zu verwenden. Seitdem ist die Freie Software Gemeinschaft immer größer geworden und es sind in den letzten 25 Jahren viele großartige Projekte entstanden, die heute in vielen Bereichen gar nicht mehr wegzudenken sind.

Das Fellowship-Treffen soll uns die Möglichkeit geben sich in gemütlicher Runde kennen zu lernen. Bei Interesse kann man sich dann überlegen, wie ein regelmäßiges Fellowship-Treffen aussehen könnte.

Eingeladen sind neben unseren Fellows alle, die sich für Freie Software und die Arbeit der FSFE interessieren.

Ich freue mich darauf möglichst viele Fellows und Freie Software Interessierte aus der Region nächsten Freitag kennen zu lernen!

Gestern (am 30. Januar 2008) habe ich an der Universität Stuttgart im Rahmen der inf.misc Reihe einen Vortrag über Freie Software gehalten. Inf.misc ist ein Veranstaltung der Fachschaft Informatik und Softwaretechnik, die von Studenten für Studenten gehalten wird. Dabei geht es um Themen, die von offiziellen Veranstaltungen der Fakultät nicht gelehrt werden.

Thema des Vortrags war die Bedeutung von Software in der Informationsgesellschaft. Neben Freier Software im allgemeinen habe ich einen Überblick über die verschiedenen Lizenzmodelle in der Freien Software Welt gegeben und die 3. Version der GNU General Public License (GPL) sowie die FSFE vorgestellt.

The FSF has released a Quick Guide to GPLv3. This article explains all major changes in an easy-to-understand overview. So it is a good staring point for everyone who wants to understand GPLv3.

It is also a good resource for developers who plan to release their software under the GPLv3.

Der 15. September wird von verschiedenen Gruppierungen international als “Software Freedom Day” ausgerufen. Weltweit finden Veranstaltungen statt, um auf die Vorzüge Freier Software — welche von jedem Menschen uneingeschränkt benutzt, verändert und weitergegeben werden darf — aufmerksam zu machen.

Die Linux User Group Backnang beteiligt sich hieran mit einer “Freien Software Nacht” in der Bar “Das Wohnzimmer” in Backnang. An verschiedenen Tischen sollen Projekte vorgestellt werden, an denen sich die Linux User Group beteiligt. Kostenlose GNU/Linux-CDs werden ebenfalls verteilt.

Die Linux User Group wird den gesamten Abend vor Ort für Fragen und Gespräche zur Verfügung stehen.

Wenn Ihr also schon immer auf eine Möglichkeit gewartet habt, um mit anderen Freunden Freier Software und Fellows aus der Region in Kontakt zu kommen, dann könnte das die Gelegenheit sein!
Ich werde da sein und würde mich freuen, den einen oder anderen Fellow bei dieser Gelegenheit kennen zu lernen.

At this weekend Rainer and I were in Chemnitz at the “Chemnitzer Linux Tage” (CLT). It was the first time that FSFE had a booth at this event and for me it was the first time going to a fair especially to work at the FSFE booth.

The first day was really hard for us. Because of the late decision to go to Chemnitz we had a bad place for our booth and many visitors hadn’t seen us. But luckily we had found a much better place for the second day. This is a picture of our booth at the second day, it was in the central corridor in front of the entrance:

I was surprised how many visitors come to our booth and asked who we are and what we are doing. After they had seen our GPLv3 stickers and pins the new version of the GPL and especially the DRM clause was a common topic, too. It was a lot of fun to talk about the FSFE, our work and other related topics to the visitors.
Now that I’m back from Chemnitz and after almost four days without internet connection i have checked my emails and some news sites. I was surprised to read on pro-linux (a German GNU/Linux news site) a comment from a visitor of the CLT that he has talked to us and he thinks that FSFE has a “very intelligent position on DRM”. If others has become such a positive impression from FSFE too, i think it was a great success.I had a lot of fun and the CLT was a great event. I hope we will have a booth again next year.
